We are correct in thinking that each of us have the right of freedom, to be the person we feel we are, inside in our inner arena.
The issue is, there is another level of our existence, that we bump into where any other person enters into that arena, and that is the level we call society. Society is two or more people interacting in a way that is functional, and where those interacting, do not act harmfully to each other… and this is by definition, a two sided coin…. It protects both me from you and you from me.
Simply considering “my rights” does not look like this… it is self centered, and that self-centeredness undermines any sort of social rules by disallowing other folks rights.
So…. while we must support inner freedom, we must also support the society which makes that inner freedom possible, by acting responsibly towards the others in that society. Multi-cultural society is very much a high level test of this concept. 🤠🪶
While I agree with the basic concepts of this post, I am feeling less and less certain that our society “makes that inner freedom possible.” In fact, I am concerned that our society, in general (and influenced by those in power and their personal interests) often is very against inner freedom. At the moment, I am reading Gabor Mate’s recent book, “The Myth of Normal,” and sadly, his commentary on our materialistic society’s influence on our minds and hearts is spot-on.
