Short answer: No.
What is the best we can do to limit corruption?
We can build a democratic system with checks and balances…… done…..
Did it fix the corruption problem?
No.
Why?
Because humans always find “workarounds”.
So can we ever fix the corruption and abuse of power that runs like a thick rope throughout our history?
Perhaps if we break it down, we might at least be able to distinguish the issues.
In a world of one person, there is no power struggle between humans… because there is only one… 🙂
But put two humans together, and immediately, a struggle of who’s who starts.
Put a group of people, and there will be a struggle of who gets to go on the top of the pile.
We will never “fix” this issue, because it is part of being human.
So, simple, humans being together immediately brings this out.
But what are they really struggling for?
They want to have their will placed over the others, so they will “do what they are told”. We see this in families, groups, office politics, corporations…. everywhere where there is a position of power, some of the humans scramble to take that position.
What is it that makes that position so attractive?
Control, admiration of ones peers, fame, the ability to milk the position, money, etc.
The more power a person has, the more this position corrupts their minds about “who am I” and “What’s in it for me” and “What do I get to do”…
For example, the admiration of the opposite sex, which most of the time, is about pairing with a person of power, gives them the ability to take “favours” in return for bestowing something on that person…. or perhaps they snuggle up close in order to get their own position of power and safety ……
I think this line of considering this MIGHT lead to answers about how to control this very human motivation.
Can you imagine a government where the people in positions of power kept their original pure intentions of being a servant of the people did not get lost? Seems like a fairy tale, eh?
Decentralization would seem to be the only way to keep too much power being placed in one persons or parties hands.
What if government were built this way:
Municipal – dealing with all local issues, local taxation and economy.
Provincial – dealing only with helping with issues of standardization and interconnections between Municipal.
Federal – dealing only with overall standardization, bringing a single face to foreign affairs, interconnections of Municipal and Provincial such as highways and safety.
Elections would be at the municipal level, with an elected official for the Provincial (State) and Federal levels, being completely responsible to the municipal level constituents.
Policing and public safety would also be built in the same way, being built municipally, with an elected heirarchy, upwards into Provincial (State) and Federal levels to deal with issues interconnected between municipalities.
Funds for the Provincial (State) and Federal levels would be collected locally, and dispersed to those levels, keeping the upper levels of government towing the line of what the local level of people are wanting.
Was just reading about Jesus washing his disciples’ feet, and telling them that those who are least are greatest in his kingdom …. I think that is true … but it sure isn’t very “human” … even the disciples had a really hard time believing that (and acting on it)…
