Understanding how the human mind works is how we can free ourselves from fixations that pull us into toxic situations.
When psychologists tell people that their feelings are what they need to pay attention to, it ties them into the concept that feelings are more than just a cloud floating thru the mind, and that to focus on them only makes them grow and become exaggerated. We end up thinking that the feelings are REAL, and we end up holding onto those feelings, which is exactly the opposite of what we need to do.
If we don’t know how to extricate ourselves from deepening moods, from being offended, and from our general neediness, it will spiral into us doing harm to ourselves and others.
The story of the many headed hydra shows what happens when we try to deal with feelings head-on. Cut one head off and two grow back.
Neuroscience shows us the fixated, narrative building mind (DMN), and the “Drop it” mind (TPN). If we learn how to toggle to the TPN, the DMN loses its ability to cling to feelings, and we can find clarity.
