Hydrogen as a sustainable energy source

It seems to me that the push to develop hydrogen as an energy source bumps into the same problem Tesla had with electricity… he wanted to make it free for everyone….. this IS one place where greedy energy companies block the road…… thoughts? Rather than having huge centralized plants (theres that c word again) and shipping/piping over large distances, build local plants that could locally employ, and keep the profit local…… If folks like Musk really want to help humanity, that sounds like a solid project. They are finding better and better methods of producing hydrogen. ????
