Just thinkin’ about what’s important in considering a social system ….. The process of looking into some sort of system which might work in the human world, has led to fundamental questions (the main one being, why would i consider myself intelligent enough to think about this type of thing in the first place!!…. haha ) Here are two fundamental questions:Should upholding individual freedom be the governing principle of society? OR Should upholding some sort of law and order be the governing principle of society? It seems that the world has shifted towards the second of these options…… or perhaps it always has been…….As a friend of mine says “we are all disobedient children, and so keeping law and order is the most important”……
Hmm… It seems like in some societies (eg our neighbour to the south), “individual freedom” is the underlying myth … (of course that depends on how one define’s freedom…)…. Very interesting podcast on CBC Ideas last night: Cowboy’s Lament (part 1) on this topic. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/podcasts/documentaries/the-best-of-ideas/

The concept that protection of individual rights and freedoms is going to create unity is the myth. Unity comes from folks feeling safe enough to consider the other persons rights and freedoms at least at the same level that they consider their own rights and freedoms ….. but in a world where protecting ourselves is the most important, laws about protecting individual rights and freedoms is a second best….. And the other question is… if folks aren’t living from their “center”, then there will always need to be cops….. unless there is some sort of separation….. and that never works….. but then how do the kids ever learn anything better?
